People ask me all the time why I choose to serve now, at perhaps the most challenging time in California history. The answer is pretty straightforward: It isn't easy to govern now, but now is when it really counts.

I've tried to tackle the issues that matter most since I began representing you in the state legislature in 2006. As I write this I'm working to create jobs, make healthcare more affordable and enact sweeping reforms to California's government.

As an Assembly member and a former City Councilmember, I've written laws that will produce dramatic improvements to L.A.'s transportation system, require drunk drivers to install ignition interlocks that prevent cars from starting unless their drivers are sober, and authored some of the nation's toughest laws to combat gun violence.

I've also fought to reduce gangs, and increase after school programs and job opportunities to keep kids out of trouble. I'm the author of the nation's most comprehensive law to get toxics out of everyday products so we can prevent diseases like cancer.

Throughout my career I've also been a leader in preventing air and water pollution, reforming public education, and going after slumlords and scam artists who target seniors.

I've been privileged to be honored for my work by the Red Cross, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Congress of California Seniors, Equality California, Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, and many others.
